Researchers have discovered that bacteria found in the intestines of cows can degrade a variety of plastics.
Researchers in Austria, on the other hand, have made a discovery that could help deal with some of the world’s millions of tonnes of single-use plastic that are discarded each year.
Bacteria living inside a cow’s rumen – one of the four compartments of its stomach – can digest certain plastics, including those used to make single-use packaging, according to researchers at Vienna’s University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. The next step is to identify the microbes that are causing the problem so that they can be genetically modified in the lab.
